MACD turns up. Why might a buy still be premature?
The indicator crosses up, but the price keeps falling. What did the crossover actually show?

How it works
The MACD line is EMA12 minus EMA26. Above zero the fast average is above the slow average; below zero it is below. The signal line smooths MACD. A crossover describes these calculated lines, not the next candle.
The 12/26/9 periods are bars: hours on H1 and days on D1. Our illustration uses EMA9 for the signal. Standard MetaTrader 5 uses SMA9 and plots the MACD line as bars. TradingView usually plots MACD minus Signal as the histogram. Check the series name and settings.
What to check
- Compare the latest confirmed price highs and lows using the same scale.
- Locate MACD relative to zero, then compare it separately with its signal line.
- On a closed candle, check whether the crossover occurs at support, inside a range or just below resistance.
A hypothetical example
Example: MACD is −2 and its signal is −3. MACD is above the signal, but EMA12 remains below EMA26. Price approaches the last pullback high at 100 from below. In this exercise there is no buy until a close above 100. A new pullback low invalidates the idea that the pullback has ended. A close above 100 is a reason to assess entry and risk separately.
When to skip
Skip when you cannot identify a price level that invalidates the idea or when the entry sits next to the range boundary. A crossover can disappear before the candle closes.
A large positive MACD is not an RSI-style overbought reading. There is no fixed MACD level above which selling is automatically justified.
Try it yourself
On H1, add MACD 12/26/9. Mark one upward crossover in a trend and one in a range. Record price structure and distance to the nearest obstacle for each.
With MACD = −2 and signal = −3, someone says the fast average is above the slow average. What is wrong?
Show explanation
EMA12 is still 2 price units below EMA26. MACD is above its signal line but below zero. Price conditions and a risk calculation are still needed.
Identify exactly what crossed, then locate the signal in the price structure.
